Let’s discuss the ones that are getting the most hype right now: both Ozempic, Wegovy and newest Mounjaro are medications that can be used for weight loss in non-diabetic patients. Ozempic contains the active ingredient semaglutide, which is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It works by increasing feelings of fullness, reducing appetite, and slowing down the emptying of the stomach. Wegovy, on the other hand, is a higher-dose formulation of semaglutide specifically approved for chronic weight management. It is administered once a week as a subcutaneous injection. Both medications have shown significant weight loss results in clinical trials. Mounjaro is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. It is a once-weekly injection that helps to control blood sugar levels by stimulating the release of insulin and reducing the production of glucose in the liver. Mounjaro is a newer medication and is still being studied for its potential use in weight loss. It is similar to Ozempic and Wegovy in that it can also promote weight loss in addition to managing blood sugar levels. However, it’s important to note that these medications should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Insurance may be used to help pay the high cost of these treatments, but many are finding they cannot get approved unless they have a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes, or chronic weight management issues (a large amount of weight to lose).
Side effects of the shots
The mutual side effects of these 3 treatment options include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation. Other potential side effects include headache, tiredness, dizziness, feeling bloated, belching, gas, stomach flu, heartburn and runny nose or sore throat. Serious Ozempic side effects include allergic reactions, changes in vision and pancreatitis. Possible side effects of Wegovy include: pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, increased risk of low blood sugar in patients with Type 2 Diabetes, kidney problems, serious allergic reactions changes in vision, increased heart rate, depression or thoughts of suicide. All 3 have an FDA boxed warning for the risk of thyroid tumors. Mounjaro has a “safety summary with warnings” that include tumors in the thyroid, including thyroid cancer. It states to watch for symptoms such as lump or swelling in the neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or shortness of breath. Report to your healthcare provider immediately.
I haven’t used these medications firsthand but my first thought would be to RUN from any of these treatments as I would not want these risks. I’m sure folks have to look at the benefits such as lowering A1C, lowering the risk of major cardiovascular events such as stroke, heart attack, or heart disease and weight loss.
